Senegal, Dakar, island of Goree, island of the slave trade. The island of Gorée, or simply Gorée, is an island in the North Atlantic Ocean located in the bay of Dakar. It is a symbolic place of the memory of the slave trade in Africa, officially recognized by the United Nations (UN) in 1978: Gorée, “memory island” of this tragedy, was thus one of the very first places to be included in the world heritage list managed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
